• Monsters exist outside the confines of accepted morality. That is the reason for my fascination with them. Horrific or humorous, monsters operate in the anarchy of the sublime.

I must admit to a particular love for the idea of oddball creatures bumping into our lives. The contrast between the universally accepted rules of society and the lack of any recognition, on their part, of our morality, seems absurd and funny to me. Old TV programs like The Addams Family and The Munsters relied on this contrast. The Munsters were a typical sit-com family who didn’t understand why the world reacted strangely toward them. The Addams were just being themselves, puzzled by why a mail carrier or school superintendent would run away from a growling bear rug or a morose butler.
