I have been reading the second volume of Fantagraphics Books' collection of Popeye newspaper strips by E.C. Segar. It is fantastic! It would be impossible for a strip like Segars to see publication in newspapers today. The 21st century will probably see the extinction of the newspaper comic strip. Independent publishers and the internet may become the only place to find true personally expressive visions by cartoonists.
