Casper Strange Ghost Stories 14

I wasn't keeping up with Harvey Comics in 1977, but it seems like they were trying to expand their established characters into new titles. I think this was the last issue of this comic that began being published bi-monthly in 1974.

I was attracted to the texture in the drawings of the rain and snow in the panels to this Wendy the Good Little Witch story; and there's a jack-o-lantern on the cover.

Halloween for fountain Pen Lovers

I don't think of fountain pens as being a staple treat for the Halloween season; but I stumbled onto these pen holders. The zombie is great; but I wonder why it wasn't a vampire. I wonder if a designer from a factory in China didn't quite understand the Western concept, either actual folklore or literary imagining, about killing a vampire with a stake in the heart. Vampires in China are different from the western version.

I have ordered from His Nibs before and I have always been happy. I do see this from other places if you do a web search for zombie pen holder.

Halloween French Fold 2

I did use a white out pen on one of the drawings.

Halloween French Fold 1

I have been busy with paying projects. Finding time to have fun drawing for Halloween has been difficult. What I decided to do was to take some letter size printer paper and do a French fold. This creates four equal space for me to sketch into on a piece of cheap paper.

If I'm on the phone or waiting for a large file to do something on my computer, I pull out these sheets of folded paper and draw into one rectangle at a time.

There is very little planning or attempt to have the images relate to each other. I just gave myself a few limitations - monster portraits and only spend 10 to 15 minutes to finish each box. I also am only using a very quick blue pencil sketch that I ink with waterproof ink that I put into one of the Pentel Aquash brushes I have.

Halloween Monster Pen and Ink

I do not get a chance to dip a brush or nib into a bottle of ink as often as I would like; but here is the last version of this monster that I tried

To be honest, I did some added inking and white out corrections in Photoshop.

Halloween Monster Second

I tried to make my second try at the pencil art look like a woodblock print.

The added a floppy nose; but It was a bit too much for me.

I do like the bold colors on this one.

Halloween Monster First

For this first try at finishing my pencil sketch, I was happy with it. The art didn't look as good reduced. That is why I tried finishing the art in other ways.

Halloween Monster Initial Sketch

The sketch is very simple. I used it for shapes and my intention was to add details with the inking and coloring stage.

If you compare the final art with this sketch, you will see several additions to the composition that I made as I was working.

Halloween Monster Final

I took a break from my regular assignments to work on this October monster.

It started out as a quick pencil sketch that I then inked and colored in Illustrator CS2 with only gray values .

Exporting the art with layers into Photoshop, I added a bit of texture, color, and some airbrush work to the art.

That sounds easy enough; but it took me several tries to get things balanced and to my liking. Maybe, I'll post some of the other versions I did of this art.

Blue Moon Harvest Pumpkin Ale

Here is a better look at the pumpkin beer art from the six-pack carton.

There are several elements about this graphic that make me drawn to it. First there is, anything pumpkin I like! The art is done in an older fruit-crate-label style; and it has a relief print, woodblock, look to it. These are all things that I find visually pleasing.

October Beverages

I have mentioned before that I do not drink alcohol very often - I don't even drink enough plain water; but I did enjoy this Blue Moon Harvest Pumpkin Ale yesterday. It was over 90 F outside and this cold mellow brew tasted pretty good. I was a little afraid to drink a beer with pumpkin and spices; but there is no sweet pumpkin pie flavor.

I wait all year for Odwalla's Pumpkin Protein drink. This flavor is only available in October and November. I have even used it as a milk substitute in pumpkin pie.

Happy October

Lucky Supermarket Alameda, California
It has officially been Fall for a few weeks. Pumpkins have been at the stores already; but with the first day of October, the Halloween and Autumn seasons seem to really be here.

Now, to just stay away from the candy aisle!
