• The meaning of this illustration in an original letterpress printed German almanac from 1870 is lost to me. I suppose I could try and translate the caption; but then the exotic mystery from the past would loss some of it's interest for me.
I did type "kikeriki - kalender" into an online translation site and was given a translation of ''cock-a doodle-do almanac." The digest sized magazine appears to be a satirical publication conserned with the politics in Germany at the time.
I wonder, is the anthropomorphic bird the mascot for the publication? Several other rooster images appear throughout the magazine and are often calling out or "blowing the whistle" about something or someone. Humanized characters like this bird, Bugs Bunny, Woody Woodpecker or thousands more are all monsters to me. They are the results of recombining parts from separate humans or animals to create new form. This is a classic dictionary definition of a monster.
