Free Comic Book Day is a single day when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free* to anyone who comes into their stores.
Most of the comic shops in my area only let you take 2 of the free offerings. One store lets you tale one of each of the free books. The GUMBY, GYRO GEARLOOSE, EC SAMPLER, and HELLBOY books were pretty good.
