Tales From the Crypt #40

I found a jpg file of the original black and white pen and ink art for this Jack Davis (master I am not worthy) cover on the internet. It seemed like a good exercise to color it up without looking at how the original published comic's cover, to the lower left, had been completed. I didn't want to stray too far from how an EC comic book cover done in the 1950s might look; but I do have more subtle shading and hues than was done then. I also seemed to use fewer warm colors than the printed cover.

You did a great job re-coloring an old EC classic.

It's interesting to note... this particular issue was the one that was used in the senate hearings (it was determined that this comic and others like it were a cause of juvenile delinquency) back in 1954.

Would it be possible to get a copy? I own the original art and I think it would compliment it nicely.

My best,
Bill Berube

Thanks. You must be very happy to own that great piece of original art! Jack Davis is a master. It was fun to color. The photoshop file is about 16 MB (300dpi) and is just from a somewhat cleaned up, and a little reconstructed, jpg of the original art; so it isn't a perfect copy of the line art. If you give me your email, I'll send you the photoshop file. Hopefully, you can get a quality printout made from it.
