Year of the Dragon Revised

I wasn't satisfied with the original art. Prodded by someone at Digital art Tutorials Forum, I worked on the art to make it look more dragon-like and placed it within a design.

It looks like my dad, sister and one brother were all born in separate Years of the DRAGON. My mother and I are both TIGERS.

A Monstar is Reborn

"We Dare you to read this!" is what Cracked stated on it's cover. The magazine was a poor attempt at copy the more successful Mad Magazine. Cracked did have some nice art by the old Mad artist John Severin; but the writing in the magazine formatted comic was never very good. The writer listed for this story is George Gladir. I know his name from Archie Comic's Madhouse; and I can feel that same "just missed the mark" humor -- but still fun!

Porkula

Count Porkula wants to liposuction you. The first is a pen and ink drawing. The second is ink and brush. Both drawings had the tone added in Photoshop.

I have been inking with a brush or a long time. Using a dip pen is becoming more interesting for me.

Creature Beach

• I was watching a tutorial by Brian Haberlin yesterday and wanted to give the technique a try. It was about using Photoshop's dodge and burn tools as the main rendering tools on an image. The process felt very familiar and similar to how I once did my traditional printmaking. Years ago, I creates textures and tone in my etching plates, layered a dark aquatint over the plate and then burnished out my highlights from the dark values to form images. This Photoshop technique gives that same silvery quality I liked - very similiar to a mezzotint.

This creature above is basically Brian's design from the tutorial. I just redrew it and added some of my own touches. I enjoy this process of working. It is a lot like discovering organic forms in clouds or in the random pebble design pattern on my bathroom's linoleum floor.
